Free shares of bankruptcy!

NOTE: Sorry for the length, it’s a Sunday evening rant.

Initially my thought this year was to purchase everyone on my Christmas list the same thing this year. Not because it would make my life super-easy but mainly because I feel that no matter what position you are in financially, it’s a good read and something I know we have benefited from going through. Ultimately though, I decided against it. It is a sensitive subject to approach and it would be far too easy to have somebody think I was calling them out.

One of the things that we have been striving for since taking the class is to live differently than how we use to live (much less how 70% or more of America lives). Accruing debt. Sadly, I could have used the lessons long before I entered college and we surely would be much farther ahead at this point in time.

Either way, one of the things both the book and the class talk about is being a slave to the mindset of “we’ll always have a car payment.” While not easy, we are working towards training ourselves to think differently than this approach.

So close.

Today is the closest I have ever come to getting the coveted “Bag O’ Crap” during a Woot-off. Bummer. I was quick enough to get the “I want one” button and get to the login page but since I wasn’t smart enough to have logged in earlier in the day, I lost out due to a server overload. For those that don’t follow too closely, they sell for a dollar but are rarely just “crap” and always sell out in less than a minute.

A misstep for Google.

Google, you know I have mad love for you. But why in the world would you take up more screen real estate on your latest update to iGoogle? Terrible idea. Terrible. I didn’t even use your tab system before, and now I am forced to. Not a good UI practice from a team with a very good UI reputation.

Here’s to waiting for a Greasemonkey script to set it back to its old self.

Domain Squatters: Dregs of the interwebs

I find ways to remind myself daily of the multitude of levels of incompetence I possess. One of my many traits that lend a hand in the process is my ability to procrastinate on almost any given task. Especially the minute ones.

About 2 weeks ago, I used a site to test the availability of a couple of domain names thinking that I would later return to pick the one I wanted up. Instead of doing what normal people do and taking the extra three minutes while I sat there staring at it, I procrastinated. And to reward me for my procrastination, a kind fellow (or lady) by the name of Kim Tae Young in Korea snatched it right up. Upon visiting Mr. (Ms.) Tae Young’s site, I noticed not a word of it was in English. And since I wasn’t searching for a Korean domain name, one has to wonder what exactly is the need for said person to purchase the exact domain I was looking for.

I can only assume that Kim Tae Young is what is referred to as a domain squatter. One of the lowest forms of life on the internets ranking in stature right along with forum trolls, spammers and email forward abusers. His whole goal is to search around for possible purchasable domain names and snatch them up hoping to make a quick buck. (Or in the case of the kind German owning my .com, 10K euros)

Thanks again procrastination, you really did me in on this one. Here’s a preview of my conversation with client tomorrow:

“Hello, client? Slight changes ahead…”

This one ranks right up there with some of my other all-time biggies like:

  • It’ll be a good idea to wait until the last week to produce the entire assigned workload for current semester long Internet class.
  • Even though I know it burns 10W-30 at a quart a week AND that it holds 4 quarts AND that I last put oil in it 6 weeks ago, a few more days can’t hurt.
  • What do you mean waiting until the Thursday before Prom to ask a girl to go is considered bad practice? You mean they all have dates already?

Here’s to hoping that one day I will learn… and that I’ll never use www.ajaxwhois.com again.

More bailout ranting

No matter what side of the fence you sit on politically, I urge you to contact your Congressman TODAY and tell them firmly that their job will rest in their decision on the upcoming vote.

Last week I contacted both Senators for the state of Texas and my district’s Congressman and explained to them my thoughts on the measure. The message was heard and in an overwhelming upset the House of Representatives turned down the measure and did what they rarely do, be the true voice of the people.

From everything I have heard, greater than 95% of the people do not want this measure to pass. We don’t want another Trillion dollars to be added to our already insurmountable debt. The numbers of calls, letters and emails have swamped your representatives. So much so that their websites have been intermittent in service handling the load.

So why then did our Senators not listen? (more…)
