More bad music
Tay Zonday (aka Adam Nyerere Bahner) has been causing a stir on YouTube since July when he posted a video for his original song, “Chocolate Rain.” The song was described by Zonday on a recent national radio broadcast as “cheesy”, and admitted that its cryptic lyrics dealt with racism. The video has been watched hundreds of thousands of times in the last month and even been covered by artists such as John Mayer and Tre Cool (from Green Day).
The song is terrible but repetitive so it easily gets stuck in your head. I can’t decided whether I like his songwriting (in)ability or his voice less. When watching him, I don’t even know how he makes the sounds he does. He also throws in some great idiosyncrasies in each video that I can only assume are for your viewing pleasure. Including the turning of his head away from the microphone every 8 seconds and singing only out of the right side of his mouth. On top of it all, I am pretty sure he has to be a computer generated image; either that or he is a wood carving similar to Pinocchio. And with all of that, I can’t stop watching him.
In the last month, Zonday has appeared on national TV on both Kimmel and Best Week Ever. Impressive, I suppose.
I guess the moral of the story here is that if you look like a mannequin, have a terrible voice, learn eight notes on a piano, and have a webcam you could be a star. Ah, the land of the beautiful.
Enough writing, enjoy a little (80’s cover) Tay for yourself:

I actually saw him perform on Best Week Ever. And I have to say it did make me giggle. Ah, someday…Christian, you and I will be Internet super stars!
